Understanding what happens at a screening appointment
Our cardiac screening appointments are conducted by fully trained clinicians from Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The process is designed to be thorough yet comfortable, ensuring every young person receives comprehensive cardiac assessment.
Young people aged 14-35 years apply for a screening appointment. Once registered, you'll receive confirmation and details about your appointment date and location.
Before your screening, you'll complete a confidential medical questionnaire. This covers your personal medical history, family cardiac history, and any symptoms you may have experienced. All information is kept strictly confidential.
On screening day, everyone receives an ECG test. This painless procedure records the electrical activity of your heart. Small electrodes are placed on your chest, arms, and legs. The test takes just a few minutes and provides vital information about your heart rhythm and structure.
Some young people will be selected for an echocardiogram based on their questionnaire responses or ECG results. This ultrasound scan creates detailed images of your heart, showing its structure and how well it's pumping. The procedure is completely painless and non-invasive.
Every young person has a private consultation with a CRY cardiologist to discuss their test results. The cardiologist will explain your results, answer any questions, and provide advice. If any concerns are identified, you'll receive guidance on next steps and follow-up care.
CRY is the leading charity in the UK working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). They provide cardiac screening, support bereaved families, and fund medical research and pathology services.
All our screening appointments are conducted by CRY's experienced medical professionals, ensuring the highest standards of care and accuracy.
